Moon (2009) – worth watching

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet’s power problems.- IMDb

I think I’m beginning to finally ‘get’ it this film, I had to bite my tongue so many times during it to stop myself asking millions of questions. (For a fairly intelligent girl I am seriously slow when it comes to any complicated film plots, for some reason. I’ve only really noticed my propensity for question-asking recently.) My flat mates would probably tell you that several ‘What’s going onnnn’s’ still managed to escape my lips. However, the day after seeing it I was still thinking about it. It was so smart and original and really gave you something to think about, and struggle with, in my case.

Sam Bell has been working alone for 3 years in a little station on the moon, manning the ‘harvesters’ and sending back the helium parcels to earth. his only companion is the robot system GERTY who is voiced wonderfully by Kevin Spacey. I wonder if you could survive the loneliness if you had Gerty to talk to? He often asked Sam did he want to talk about things when he sensed that Sam was angry or upset. I think maybe I could.  But I’m not sure. Sam certainly starts to go a bit funny as he nears the end. The two boys reckoned you couldn’t survive it, and one suggested you would end up chatting up the machine. Or words to that effect. Eye roll.

Sam is anxious to be replaced in 2 weeks time when the film opens, when he will go back to earth to his beautiful wife Tess and his nearly 3 year old Eve who wasn’t yet born when he left. There’s no live feed to earth so he relies on video messages. when his mind starts to play tricks on him it’s this that he clings to.

Anyway there’s a humongous twist right in the middle of it which caused lots of confusion and fascination for me. I’m not sure I should tell you. No, just watch it. It’s really riveting stuff, and Sam Rockwell, who plays Sam Bell, gives an amazing performance. Just thought I should share with you!

I crack myself up.
