The First Giveaway !

Hello! First of all, I’m sure it was hard to tell, but I had a great ‘Blogaversary’ last week, so thank you to all who contributed to that and for supporting my blog in general for the last year! As promised, I want to do a competition to further mark the occasion.

I tried to get some prizes that reflect life, lyrics and lemoncake…so without further ado:

  • So we have the Josh Ritter album (Hello Starling – 2003) that originally melted my heart with the LYRICS.
  • The yummiest shower gel ever, makes you feel/smell like you are in a LEMON CAKE.
  • Autobiography of the funniest lady ever… LIZ LEMON…Tina Fey. (I haven’t read this but super want to.)
  • And a wee pineapple writing set, because here at Life, Lyrics and Lemoncake we love our snail mail.

What do I have to do to win these lovely prizes?

Well, it’s simple. Leave a comment below: I want to hear your favourite lyric/lyrics! Keep it to a 3 line minimum, and if you have several (like me), just choose ONE of your favourites. If you really want me to hear the song, I think you can post a link to/youtube video in your comment also.

I will keep the competition open until this Sunday 5th February. The winner will be chosen from a hat and hopefully announced on Monday.  Friends are allowed to enter as sometimes you were my sole supporters. I will be fair about it. You know me.

To start you off, one of my favourite lyrics ever, Josh Ritter of course. From a beautiful story song called ‘Another New World.’

We talked of the other worlds we’d discover
as she gave up her body to me
And as I chopped up her mainsail for timber
I told her of all that we still had to see.

It’s about the ship the Annabelle Lee… and the captain. It’s like a love story, it’s heartbreakingly beautiful and will probably make you cry.

So… get thinking. And spread the word far and wide! I’m very excited about this. And can’t wait to discover new lyrics.  Goodluck!

P.s If you haven’t visited before, hi! Have a look around, and comments are my favourite.

P.p.s What do you think of my new banner? I ❤ it. And I can’t stop thinking about those cupcakes STILL.

  1. I think it’s fate that i’m wearing my Pearl Jam converse today, with my favourite lyrics of my favourite song from my favourite band on them… twin thing?! And to steer me away from all the lovely Josh lyrics so as not to try and get on your good side 😀

“I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun, I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on, I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on, I wish I was the verb to trust and never let you down” – Wishlist, Pearl Jam

Only the first two are on my shoe and are my proper favourites, but I love that whole verse/song. AND there is a reason if you’re ever interested to hear 🙂

Love the idea by the way xx

  2. This is a toughie… I’ve so many favourite lyrics. You should listen to Laura Marling Feef, you would love her lyrics.

I think I’ll settle on Regina Spektors “Samson”. I love the whole song and the idea of the love story of Samson and Delia.
But my favourite lyrics from it are “and the history books forgot about us, and the Bible didn’t mention us. You are my sweetest downfall, I loved you first…”

could listen to her all day. Oh and I LOVE the new banner, it looks good enough to eat 🙂 x

  3. Ohh lovely banner Fiona! Katy Perry definitely my all time favourite and of course Firework..
“If you only knew what the future holds, after a hurricane comes a rainbow!”
When in doubt about the present or future this song always brings a smile to my face =)!

  4. Thank you so much for offering such a lovely and generous giveaway! One of my favorites is Sun Comes Up, It’s Tuesday Morning by Cowboy Junkies.

There’s something about an afternoon spent doing nothing
Just listening to records and watching the sun falling
Thinking of things that don’t have to add up to something

  5. Ok, I wont win any prizes for this, and you have to hear Aretha sing it, but still:

    I love you
    I love you
    I love you
Call me, the minute, you get there

( I want the Tina Fey book Feef! )

  6. How fun!

This is the story of my life, and I write it every day.
I know, it isn’t black and white
    And it’s anything but gray..

  7. Well its taken me long enough, but here it is. By you know who, written about Dublin’s drug problem in the 80’s:

    Sweet the sin
    Bitter taste in my mouth
    I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You got to cry without weeping
    Talk without speaking
    Scream without raising your voice

You know I took the poison
    From the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing…ha la la la de day
Ha la la la de day
    Ha la la de day

  8. ‘Could it be? Yes, it could. Something’s coming, something good, If I can wait!
Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is, but it is gonna be great!’

One of my favourite songs to listen to ❤

'You're like a hard candy with a surprise center'

I could keep going. Argh. You're an inspiration Fiona, keep up the writing 🙂

  9. BEAUTIFUL new banner.

I’ve been agonising about my favourite lyric … I honestly didn’t think I had one. I’ve never been a person to collect quotes or lyrics and have them really resonate with me. But I was walking to school today to pick up my Eldest and I really needed to listen to something comforting, something that feels familiar and soothing. So I put on some Sarah McLachlan. She’s my favourite. And I listened to Fallen several times.

    Here’s the lyric I chose:

We all begin with good intent
When love was raw and young
We believe that we can change ourselves
    The past can be undone
But we carry on our back the burdens time always reveals
In the lonely light of morning
In the wound that would not heal
It’s the bitter taste of losing everything
    I’ve held so dear

I don’t know why that speaks to me so much – it’s actually pretty sad. I think a lot of it is to do with the way she sings it and the music behind the lyrics, but whatever. It’s one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite singers. (If you’re not familiar with the song, here’s the link to it on youtube: )

  10. Great giveaway!

So many great songs to choose from, but one of my absolute favorites is “I’d Rather Be With You” by Joshua Radin
    Finally see you are naturally
The one to make it so easy
When you show me the truth
Yeah, I’d rather be with you

  11. It was overly tempting to type the lyrics of like 50 Bruce songs but I went with this little gem from David Gray instead 🙂

Please forgive me if I act a little strange
For I know not what I do
Feels like lightning running through my veins
Every time I look at you

Love the new look banner 🙂

  12. This was way too hard! Hahaha too many lyrics resonate with me for different reasons. But thought I’d surprise you and not go for Imogen Heap, and I cut it all down by trying to find more kinda positive lyrics too, in theme of your positive blog 🙂

“When the runways collude with the map that you folded wrong,
and the route you abandoned is always the path that you probably should be upon,
when the bottle-cap-ashtrays and intimate sears are all full,
with results of your breath and the threads of your fear are unfurled with the tiniest pull,
    one more time try.
Stand with your hands and your pockets and stare at the smudge on a newspaper sky
and ask it to rain a new name for everything.”

From The Weakerthans – A New Name for Everything. They’re one of the few bands where I visibly swoon listening to the different ways they describe even the most mundane things. It came down to this and Death Cab for Cutie, because they also have beautiful ways of telling stories with lovely words!
Wee link to listen to it – 🙂

  13. I love the idea of a blog-iversary giveaway! And here are some of my absolute favorite lyrics, from “Esme” by Joanna Newsom:

“The phantom of love moves among us at will, each phantom limb lost has got an angel,
So confused, like the wagging bobbed-tail of a bulldog, kindness, kindness prevails.”

  14. but as strong as i seem to think i am my distressing damsel, she comes out at night when the moon’s filled up and your eyes are bright, then i think i simply aught to

fall over, fall over, fall overboard, overboard, fall overboard just so you can catch me, you can catch me
    – Ingrid Michaelson “Overboard”

Great blog! I’m gathering from your posts that you aren’t in America. Where are you located?

  15. I know I broke the rules but i couldnt decide on which I liked the best so i’m just picking them all ❤

And i dont want the world to see me because i dont think that they would understand, when everythings made to be broken. i just want you to know who i am.

Lie awake in bed at night and think about your life, do you want to be different?

I just want you to know, i found a reason for me to change who i used to be, a reason to start over knew and the reason is you ❤

  16. can you get t shirts haha I’ll be ok with a t shirt with a lemon on it and also could be a good idea for a prize.
