I am super jealous that I am not taking part in National Novel Writing Month this November. Last year I printed out all the leaflets and had everyone tortured to sign up. I made a stab at it but had to give up, my degree not allowing me the time to devote to it. Now this year, final year of my degree would be even more unsuitable. I gloriously completed the challenge once, in 2008. I was working full-time. I never finished the story… but I got my 50,000 words in a month. I would really recommend it!
I love the camaraderie, the talk of coffee drinking, I never stayed totally in time with the 1,667 words a day target, I was jealous of the Americans’ ‘write-ins’, I even loved the geekiness of buying the NaNo hoodie and having a writing lucky charm and trying to squeeze a few words in here and there during the day. I love the idea of just freely writing and ignoring the ‘inner editor’ for a month. I see NaNoWriMo getting a lot of flak this year on Twitter and it makes me sad. It’s just a great excuse to practice writing, and feel a sense of achievement and be part of something. I don’t know what I will be doing next year but NaNoWriMo will be there in November! Looking forward to it already.
Are you taking part in NaNoWriMo this year? How are you getting on?
