Being a lyric girl, as you may be aware of by now, I like Arcade Fire very much. I particularly like their more recent album ‘The Suburbs.’ Recently it crept into my consciousness that the some ‘We Used to Wait’ was discussing letter writing, and how times have changed. I have blogged about letter writing quite a few times like here and here. This led me to look up the lyrics, which I will share with you below. I think it’s about how we/ society used to be more patient and take things at a slower pace, we used to have to wait for replies to letters, for example, and it’s strange how ‘something so small could keep you alive’ (love that line). Now everyone wants everything right here right now. A better age has perhaps gone by…

We Used to Wait I used to write, I used to write letters I used to sign my name I used to sleep at night Before the flashing lights settled deep in my brain But by the time we met By the time we met the times had already changed So I never wrote a letter I never took my true heart I never wrote it down So when the lights cut out I was left standing in the wilderness downtown Now our lives are changing fast Now our lives are changing fast Hope that something pure can last Hope that something pure can last It seems strange anekatips How we used to wait for letters to arrive But what's stranger still Is how something so small can keep you alive We used to wait We used to waste hours just walking around We used to wait All those wasted lives in the wilderness downtown I'm gonna write a letter to my true love I'm gonna sign my name Like a patient on a table I wanna walk again gonna move through the pain Now our lives are changing fast Now our lives are changing fast Hope that something pure can last Hope that something pure can last We used to wait for it We used to wait for it Now we're screaming sing the chorus again We used to wait for it We used to wait for it Now we're screaming sing the chorus again I used to wait for it I used to wait for it Hear my voice screaming sing the chorus again Wait for it...
When I did look up ‘We Used to Wait’ for lyrics, a video etc I happened by chance to come across “The Wilderness Downtown” which according to YouTube:
Interactive Music Video for Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait from their album The Suburbs.
Taking full advantage of HTML 5 combined with Google Chrome and Google resources, this website allows you to input the address of the home you grew up in and make it a full interactive video clip.
This is a very impressive, potentially emotional experience. It was somewhat thwarted by the fact that Galliagh’s google maps is rather backward, it was an uncharacteristically sunny day in my hometown the day of the google mapping (compared with the dark feel of the video) and I still live at the home I grew up in when I’m not at university, so it all looks the exact same! But I love it none the less. You can try it here: www.thewildernessdowntown.com It’s really worth a look.
